Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota

For the past five years, Outlast has hosted our film camp on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Pine Ridge is home largely to the Oglala Lakota Nation, the federal tribe that many of our students are enrolled in. The Lakotas belong to the Oceti Šakowiŋ (Seven Council Fires), a division of nations in the Midwest, including other Dakota and Nakota tribes.

Near Pine Ridge is the Badlands National Park and the Black Hills, a sacred site for the Oglalas that the US Government still holds illegally. Because of its rich, yet complex history and current challenges, Pine Ridge is victim to misrepresentations across mainstream media.

During camp, we encourage the students to emphasize the lessons and strengths that their Lakota community embodies; storytelling is a foundational aspect of the culture, and we believe that film/media production is a tool for them to both preserve their history and embark on new creations.
